tropfest 'experimentation'
is film so simple?
it's funny that directors think they need a 'deaf sound' to make us believe the sensation, because a total absence of sound would make us think it was a technical fault, chion would say. and neither is the 'blind' bit blind, it's got squiggly lines and 'looks' like when you close your eyes. sensory 'imparements' are so hard to demonstrate on screen. case in point, vincent cassel in sur mes lèvres. there was the same fiddly sound editing as though deafness was a mere technical fault. each time he was 'deaf' we'd hear a quiet hum sound. which apparently equals deaf. and in moments of transition, when he put in his hearing aid, it was simply like plugging a stray chord in to your stereo.
couldn't directors do a better job than that? that's why godard's films are great examples of experimenting with the borders of sensation in film. when there's no sound in godard, there's no sound. bande a part: 'let's have a minute of silence'. there's no sound on the soundtrack.
